Adding new photographs of Liguria,
the Italian Rivieras and Italy every month. |
Twenty-six kilometers of mountain ridges which are situated very near to the Riviera Ligure and which develop from the Colle del Giovo to the Passo del Turchino parallel to the coast, passing for the summits of Mt. Beigua (1287 m), Cima Frattin (1145 m), Mt. Rama (1148 m), Mt. Argentea (1082 m), and Mt. Reixa (1183 m). They include grasslands and precious wetlands, thick woods of beeches, English oaks, and chestnut trees, steep slopes and rocky outcrops, maritime pinewoods and belts of Mediterranean vegetation.
A mosaic of environments for which the mountain group of the Beigua is considered one of the richest areas in biodiversity in the Liguria region - the territory is known at an international level for the migration phenomenon of the birds of prey (above all of the short-toed eagle) which a few years ago allowed the nesting of the golden eagle together with the eagle owl, the rock thrush, and the whitethroat, and more than eighty ornithological species. Along its most difficult routes which remain concealed to the sight of man, there is the wolf, and from the spurs facing the sea it is easy to see the silhouettes of the whales passing in front of Varazze, Cogoleto, and Arenzano. In a few kilometers you can find an environmental variety which goes from the typical bloomings of the Mediterranean maquis to the high altitude peatbogs which are evidences of the past struggles of ice and rocks to shape the terrestrial surface.
A park where it is possible to find multicolored endemic floral species (Viola Bertolonii, Cerastium utriense, Asplenium cuneifolium, Daphne cneorum, Cheilantes marantae) and some animals belonging to the minor fauna (like the Montpellier snake, the Alpine newt, the crested newt, the common frog, etc.).A park including three important Regional State Forests ("Deiva" in the Town of Sassello, "Lerone" in the Towns of Arenzano and Cogoleto, "Tiglieto" in the Towns of Tiglieto, Masone, and Campo Ligure) where the typical ungulates of the Ligurian Apennine live: among the others, wild boars, roe deer, and fallow deer.
A territory preserving the geological history of the Liguria region through rocky outcrops, mineralizations, fossil deposits, spectacular forms continuously shaped by the exogenous agents. Difficult evolution moments shaped the heart of the Park which mainly consists of metamorphic rocks, called "ophiolites" or "green rocks", deriving from chemical-physical changes occurred on original igneous rocks which formed at the bottom of the ocean. They are mainly serpentinites and serpentine schists associating with metagabbro eclogites and prasinites; there are the relative sedimentary sequences completely transformed by the metamorphic processes and denominated calce schists even if they consist of rocks of various nature (clay schists, crystalline limestone quartz schists, etc.). The geological frame is completed by sedimentary formations of maritime origins including conglomerates and breccia, which sometimes alternate with marls and sandstones outcropping in the areas of Sassello, Varazze, and in Val Gargassa. There are rich hydrical resources both on the surface and in the underground and which feed considerable water-bearings, both from a quantitative and a qualitative point of view.
