Anacapri to Marina Grande The Phoenician Steps (Scala Fenicia) were built in the middle ages to connect Anacapri with the outside world via the harbour at Marina Grande and force a breach in the formidable cliff that divides the island of Capri in two. Nearly all commerce, people and goods, had to go up or down this switchback flight of steps. In 1877 the road was built allowing wheeled traffic, and the steps consequently fell out of use and crumbled. In 1999, the authorities, realising their historical importance and tourist potential, repaired them and re-opened them for pedestrians - and a very good job they have done. Despite their dramatic position, walkers need feel no sense of vertigo as the balustrade is always substantial. But there is no getting away from the height to be climbed, so the 995 steps from harbour to Anacapri will always be a hard slog going up.
