Positano, Province of SALERNO Population: 3,795. Altitude: 30 m. Postal Code: I-84017. Railroad Station: Sorrento (16 km).Positano is located in an exceptionally picturesque setting, perched on a steep slope on a small and protective bay. The town used to be an out-of-the-way fishing village whose residents also grew lemons and olives on narrow, terraced fields. Its cube-shaped white houses with their flat domed roofs and a small front porch recall the time of the Saracens, who once landed here. Numerous old lookout towers are encountered along the area's rugged coastline. However, during the past few decades Positano has developed into a lucrative tourist resort. The fishing boats made way for modern yachts. Many buildings were transformed into pretty villas, famous hotels and elegant nightclubs. Cars have to be left at parking areas in town in order to not disturb the local beaches. The 300-m-long sand and gravel beach offers adequately maintained beach facilities. Attractions in Positano and Its Surroundings The Church of S. Maria Assunta near the beach: Byzantine paintings at the main altar. |
