TRIP DETAILS
Day 1: Transfer day, to Valtellina. Transfer from Milan to Tirano and your hotel for 3 nights. Plan to arrive at the airport in the morning.
Day 2: Bernina Express alpine train to St Moritz. Leave after breakfast for the railway station. Alpine train to St. Moritz: a trip on the Alpine red train that crosses right over the alps to St Moritz where you can take a leisurely lunch before returning by train. In his essential guidebook for Alpine train travelers, Switzerland by Rail, Anthony Lambert writes: This line is the highest rail crossing of the Alps, helping to make it one of Europe's outstanding train journeys. Where else can you travel from glaciers to palm trees in two hours? In summer open-air cars enable passengers to experience the views and glorious air without the interference of glass, making it perfect for photographers. Our Comment: The climb is made even more astonishing by the fact that it is achieved without rack assistance [cogwheels], compelling the builders to devise tortuous loops and spirals to gain or lose height. Sit on the right." View photos of the Bernina Express.
Day 3: A day in the mountain spa of Bormio. Leave after breakfast for Bormio Old Spa. A day of relaxtion and pleasure in the ancient natural Roman Spa in Bormio where you can laze away the day in the hot water pools and treatments of one of Italy's most famous spa's. Soothe away the aches, pains and stresses of day to day life. Our Comment: The oldest spa in Bormio, known and used from Roman times, is Bagni Vecchi, that dominates from the heights of Mount Reit, right from the source of the hot springs. View photos of Bormio Spa.
Day 4: Transfer day, back to Milan-Bergamo. Allow time for the 2h45 train transfer back to Bergamo. Plan to take an afternoon flight back.

Life does not always run in a nice, straight line. There are also bends, curves and the occasional obstacle to negotiate. And sometimes you come across things in life that really do make you realise how good it is to be alive. Welcome aboard the Bernina Express. The joie de vivre line.
The Bernina Express offers breath-taking vistas from the beautiful 1st and 2nd class panorama cars. Ride over graceful viaducts, through galleries hewn into the sheer rock, through switch-back tunnels, along rushing mountain streams, glaciers and even an alpine garden. Technical buffs will enjoy knowing that the train climbs up to the 2253 m high Bernina Pass without the help of a rack-and-pinion mechanism. The entire trip is narrated. In summer, an optional bus connects Tirano (Italy) to Lugano. Seat reservations are mandatory and available at any train station in Switzerland and at most Swiss Travel System sales points abroad. Be sure to have valid entry documents for Italy since you will leave and re-enter Switzerland.
Extend your stay Extend your stay by 1 night and have a day on Lake Como, by 2 nights and visit Milan too.
Milan-Bergamo is the most convenient arrival airport for this holiday although you can fly into any of the other Milan airports - just allow extra time the transfers. If you arrive in Milan in the morning then you can easily make the transfer to Tirano in the same day. For afternoon or evening arrivals you may need to take an additional night at the start staying on Lake Como.
