Self-guided sightseeing holiday to discover some of the Levante Riviera's most beautiful and characteristic seaside towns and villages. Explore the Levante Riviera's coastal towns by foot. Each day you'll start with a stroll to the nearby railway station, never more than a 10 minute walk from your hotel. A short trip along the Riviera coast by train will then take you to the beautiful towns and fishing villages presented in this holiday itinerary, where you can explore using our self-guided itineraries. Take the train back at the end of the day before or after your evening meal. The Ligurian Peninsula is a true paradise and largely undiscovered by overseas tourists. Day 2: The 'gems' of Liguria's Levante Riviera resorts. Easy going sightseeing itinerary in and around the Levante Riviera towns of Camogli, San Fruttuoso (summer season only), Portofino & Santa Margherita.
Start the day with a train trip (0h35) to the beautiful and quite unique fishing village of Camogli. During the Spring, Summer and Autumn, it is possible to take the boat to San Fruttuoso for lunch, and then on again by boat to Portofino. Otherwise, take a 5 minute train journey to Santa Margherita for a stroll around this chic seaside resort before taking a boat or bus (0h10) to Portofino for lunch and the whole afternoon. Bus or boat back to Santa Margherita for the train back to your hotel (0h30). Full or half-day, light and leisurely, independent self-guided itinerary. The 'light' itinerary is to Portofino and Santa Margherita only and the visits to Camogli and San Fruttuoso are optional on the day - do as little or as much as you wish. View photos of Camogli.
Day 3: Sestri Levante and the coastal path to Punta Manara. 2 itineraries - 2 to 4 hrs. Sestri Levante, plus the coastal walk. Leisurely day in and around the historic centre of Sestri Levante with plenty of time to swim from the beach or in the hotel pool. - For those wishing to make a circular walk: time in the afternoon for walking the coastal trail to Punta Manara, returning via the inland route above the olive groves. - Leisurely full and half day sightseeing and walking itineraries. Full or half-day, light and leisurely, independent self-guided itinerary. The 'light' itinerary is simply a leisurely day in Sestri Levante with the walk being a 2 to 3 hour option - do as little or as much as you wish. View photos of Sestri Levante.
Day 4: A day in the magnificent Cinque Terre. Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia. Easy going sightseeing itinerary visiting the unique and beautiful Cinque Terre villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola & Riomaggiore.
Start the day with a train trip (0h25) to Monterosso, the first village of the quite spectacular Cinque Terre. Wander along the promenade and around the old town before a 5 minute train trip or 15 minute boat ride to Vernazza for lunch - possibly the most photographed and picturesque of all 5 villages. Take the train or boat once more to Manarola - for those who wish to climb more than just a few hundred steps, stop en-route for a visit to Corniglia. From Manarola, it is recommended to walk the 'Via dell'amore' (the path of love) to Riomaggiore and the last of the 5 Cinque Terre villages. Take the train back to your hotel (0h40), or take one later after an early evening dinner in one of the local fish restaurants overlooking the sea. Full or half-day, light and leisurely, independent self-guided itinerary. The 'light' itinerary is to Monterosso and Vernazza only and the visits to Manarola, Riomaggiore and Corniglia are optional on the day - do as little or as much as you wish.
View photos of the Cinque Terre.

Try and arrange flights to depart no earlier than mid-afternoon to avoid an early start before breakfast.

Travel Hint: Travelling along the Italian Riviera to visit Liguria's coastal towns and cities is recommended by train - they are frequent, comfortable and generally on time. They also take you into the resort centres and give you an additional perspective and 'flavour' of Italian life. The car by contrast is not quite as practical and ideal as first appears. There are basically two roads along the Riviera, the 'autostrada' and the 'Aurelia'. Italian 'autostrada' can be fairly stressed environments and the coastal road (via Aurelia) is pretty in parts but very slow, passing through every little seaside town. Additionally, parking in most Ligurian coastal towns is not in abundance and can take much longer to find a space than ever imagined - during most of the year, not just in summer. With car-hire, petrol, motorway tolls and parking charges, the car soon becomes an expensive and less than ideal way of getting around - and more often than not, slower overall than the journey by train.
Extend your stay Extend your stay and enjoy a 2-centre holiday - Ponente Riviera Towns. This sightseeing holiday gives you a taste of the Rivieras of Flowers and Palms along Liguria's Ponente Riviera. 3 full days visiting Alassio, San Remo by boat and the medieval walled town of Albenga.
Additional nights cost from 55 euros pppn. Stay an extra day and visit Imperia.
If you choose to take this holiday extension, you might like to consider flying in to Nice and out of Pisa or, in to Pisa and out of Nice to significantly reduce return journey travel times.
